To be able to hear your work in other media applications or players, you need to Export it to an audio file.
Alternatively, saving an Audacity project creates a project file containing all your track contents, including labels and envelope points, so you can return to your work later exactly as you left it. However, other applications cannot read Audacity projects.
Audacity as shipped can export to a number of common audio formats including WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and MP2.
You can install the optional FFmpeg library to export to many more audio formats including AC3, AMR(NB), M4A, MP4 and WMA.
- To export, choose then choose the file format you want to export to in the "Save as type" dropdown. To burn a CD for standalone CD players, choose WAV or AIFF.
- Use to export only a selected area of audio.
- Use to export multiple files at the same time, either one for each audio track, or one for each labeled area in a single track.
- lets you split the tracks from an album for multiple export as separate files.
Please be aware that when using Export or Export Multiple Audacity will only export tracks that are not grayed-out by use of the or buttons in the tracks' Track Control Panels. So what you hear by previewing with playback prior to export is what you will get in the Exported audio file.
- When using Export Selected Audio, however, Audacity will Export the selection from all selected tracks even if some if those tracks are grayed-out and inaudible on playback.
- There will be a warning if you export with all audio tracks muted.

Export Formats
